IV. Penalties

Any violation of the HIPAA Privacy Rule can result in a penalty.  More serious violations can result in criminal penalties.

  • Civil penalties include fines of $100 per incident, up to $25,000 per person.
  • Criminal penalties include fines up to $250,000 and imprisonment for up to 10 years.
