About Take Time Texas
The Texas Lifespan Respite Care Program and Take Time Texas
Did you know informal caregivers in Texas provide an estimated 3.2 billion hours of service a year, or that their services save the state an estimated $34 billion in healthcare costs annually? [A Profile of Informal Caregiving In Texas (PDF)]

The Texas Lifespan Respite Care Program (TLRCP) was initiated by the 81st Legislature to increase the availability of respite services for family members who care for a person of any age with any chronic health condition or disability. The initiative is called Take Time Texas.
TLRCP offers short-term respite care services to provide a brief period of relief or rest. Services are targeted toward the need of each caregiver and can be in the form of in-home or out-of-home respite care.
Key respite achievements in Texas include the:
-
Development of a statewide respite advisory committee.
-
Creation of the Texas Respite Coordination Center.
-
Enactment of Senate Bill 271 to increase public awareness activities and develop a statewide process to identify caregivers and assess their needs.
-
Passing of House Bill 802 to appropriate funding through the Texas Lifespan Respite Care Program to assist family caregivers.
Texas Respite Advisory Committee
The purpose of the Texas Respite Advisory Committee (TRAC) is to assist the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to:
- develop strategies to reduce barriers to access respite services;
- improve the quality of respite services; and
- provide training, education and support to family caregivers.
